China check

Seventeen points that decide whether your first day in China is relaxed or lost. Tick off what is done – every open point links to a guide (in German).

Why preparing for China is different

In China, everyday life runs on two apps: Alipay and WeChat. Taxi, metro, restaurant, business card – almost everything happens on your phone. At the same time, Google, WhatsApp and many Western services are blocked on the Chinese network. If you only notice this at the airport in Shanghai, you lose your first day.

The most important points can only be done before you fly: the passport check in Alipay, confirming your WeChat account, installing the eSIM and the apps, some of which cannot be reached from app stores in China.

The three most common mishaps

  • Power bank gone on the way home: without a visible CCC mark it is confiscated at security.
  • No connection for company email: hotel Wi-Fi is the Chinese network. With a roaming eSIM, your connection runs via abroad.
  • The taxi can’t find the address: addresses in English only help little. Save them in Chinese characters.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for a business trip to China?
German citizens can currently enter visa-free for up to 30 days, including for business meetings and trade fairs. The rule applies until 31 Dec 2026. Installation, service and other work on site are not covered.
Does WhatsApp work in China?
Not on the Chinese network or hotel Wi-Fi. With roaming or a travel eSIM, data usually runs via abroad and WhatsApp works. There is no guarantee for this.
Can I pay by credit card in China?
Often in large hotels, rarely in everyday life. Link your credit card to Alipay or WeChat Pay – then you can pay everywhere by QR code.
